This August Heat will Turn Into Cooler Weather
August brings the unofficial close of summer and cooler temperatures will likely be coming to the Tri-state area soon.
Officially, summer is only two-thirds over. Unofficially, students are in school, football is being played and fall plans are being made. The hope is that the summer has been a great one for families and friends. And everyone will keep wearing shorts and flip flops for a few more weeks, but a break in the weather is coming. That means cooler evenings and long sleeves and hats. A short time later, that furnace will need to be turned on.

Replacement Windows are a Great Investment!
Replacement windows are one of the best ideas for an older home, especially one with higher utility bills.

Have a Great Memorial Day Weekend
Memorial Day weekend kicks off the summer season and a return to “normal” gatherings.
The Memorial Day holiday is about remembering. It’s about remembering those who have served our country. This year will also be about remembering what the last 14 months have been like for the world. Memorial Day will be the first holiday of 2021 without most of the pandemic restrictions. That means parades, concerts and family get togethers will soon look like they did in 2019.
We encourage people to move forward, while being wise to still keep others safe. If you’re sick, stay home and get well. Continue to wash your hands frequently AND don’t be shocked if there are some who still want to wear a mask and stand at a distance. Being cautious is never a bad thing when it comes to transmitting germs.

Did You Know: Memorial Day is Monday, May 31, 2021. The holiday began after the American Civil War in 1868, when the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans established it. It was started as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of those who died in the war. By the 20th Century, competing Union and Confederate holiday traditions merged and Memorial Day honored all Americans killed while in military service.

We are in the midst of the Easter season, with Good Friday and Easter Sunday just days ahead. We hope this time of renewal is a special time for you, your family and your friends. This year, as we emerge from a year-long pandemic, this time will likely be extra special for so many.
For us at MTB, it’s a time to reflect on a special blessing, because of the Easter season. That blessing is knowing and understanding the ultimate sacrifice that God made and the victory of an empty grave.
Did You Know: Easter is a Christian holiday that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. In the Bible’s New Testament, the resurrection occurred three days after Jesus was crucified by the Romans and died in roughly 30 A.D. The Easter holiday concludes the “Passion of Christ,” a series of events and holidays that begins with Lent—a 40-day period of fasting, prayer and sacrifice—and ends with Holy Week, which includes Holy or Maundy Thursday (the celebration of Jesus’ Last Supper with his 12 Apostles); Good Friday (on which Jesus’ death is observed); and Easter Sunday, also known as Resurrection Sunday.

Mt. Tabor Builders Celebrates 20 Years!
MTB’s parent company is celebrating 20 years of building custom homes in the Tri-state area.
Two decades ago, Willie Eby established a company with the goal of building quality homes and major additions. The foundation of that new company — Mt. Tabor Builders, Inc. — was to partner with clients to make the building process a smooth and enjoyable one. Mt. Tabor is the parent company of MTB Windows & More.
“I’m humbled and thankful to look back on how we started and where we are today,” says Willie, who learned the building trade while working with his father. He started Mt. Tabor as a framing company, but quickly grew it into a full-service building company. Not much has changed since those early days, even with the formation and operation of a home improvement company. MTB specializes in window replacements and exterior door upgrades.
“Everyone has challenges, says Willie, referring to meeting with prospective clients about building projects. “With the young families, they’re having or raising children and are often moving up in their careers. The older folks have any number of challenges: from health issues to adult children with needs and just about anything you can think of.”

February is Cold, so do an Energy Audit Now
The winter temperatures are in full force, so do an energy audit of your home.
It’s cold outside. For those that just weather the winter weather, the good news is that we are nearly half way to spring. More good news is that this is a great time for a “do-it-yourself” energy audit of your home. Don’t worry, it’s not too hard. First of all, ask yourself if it’s cold INSIDE your house? If so, determine where that cold air is coming inside. The best places to check is around windows and exterior doors. The next place to check is the attic. The easiest way to do this, is when there is snow on the roof. After a snow, how long does it take to melt when the temperatures are still 32 degrees or lower? If it melts quickly, warm air from the house is escaping. After all, warm air rises. However, homeowners want that warm air to stop rising at the top floor’s ceiling.
Lastly, be aware of how this year’s energy bills compared to those of previous years. With a shift towards cleaner energy, fossil fuel will become more costly. At least have your furnace cleaned and tuned up. That, combined with replacement windows, replacement doors, some insulation upgrades, etc….should make a huge difference.

The History of Thanksgiving in America
The first Thanksgiving between the Pilgrims and Wampanoag Indians happened in the fall of 1621, about 10 months after the Mayflower landed in Plymouth, MA. Only 44 of the 102 original voyagers were alive due to hardships of the first year. The celebration was for the great harvest, which happened because the Native-American Indians taught them about growing local crops. The Pilgrims were appreciated, because they had helped the Wampanoags fight back a rival tribe that attacked earlier in the year.

How Independence Came to Be
For years, the colonies and England had been at odds when the colonies convened a Continental Congress in Philadelphia. In the June 7, 1776 session in the Pennsylvania State House (now Independence Hall), Richard Henry Lee of Virginia presented a resolution. These are his now-famous words:

Father’s Day History
The Father’s Day tradition can be traced back to the small mining town of Monongah, West Virginia in 1907. It was there that a memorial service for a large group of miners was thought to be the inspiration for the national holiday. The push for the holiday was spearheaded by Sonora Dodd of Spokane, Washington. She proposed June 5th, because it was her father’s birthday. He had raised six children as a single parent. It took several decades to finally become a recognized holiday, as Dodd continued to promote it to those in power.
President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers in 1966. He designated the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. He would be signed into law in 1972 by President Richard M. Nixon.

It will also be about remembering when things were different in our world. The COVID-19 virus has caused illness, death, anxiety and an incredible disruption in all areas of life. This will certainly be a Memorial Day to remember. The usual pageantry of parades, ceremonies and large gatherings of loved ones will be muted, at best. However, it might be the start of people leaving their quarantine situations, as restaurants and shops re-open and re-engage their customers.
We encourage people to move forward, while being wise and adhering to the restrictions that keep everyone safe. If you’re sick, stay home and get well. If you’re going out, where a mask in public places and keep a six-foot buffer from others. Wash your hands frequently and keep your hands away from your face.

Did You Know: Memorial Day is Monday, May 25, 2020. The holiday began after the American Civil War in 1868, when the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans established it. April is National Month of Hope and our world is definitely in need of hope.

While most of the planet is clamped down due to corona virus (COVID-19), there is reason to hope. Warmer temperatures and extra time with family are among the better outcomes from the havoc. Even inside the health crisis, there is some good news. Most people recover from the virus. Children often have little or no symptoms from it. The number of new cases from where it started is declining. Countries are working together on a common goal of limiting the spread and finding a cure. And, we should find hope in that the global community should be better prepared for future outbreaks.

Celebrations of Christmas around the world often include acts of charity. Ukrainians traditionally hang spider web-shaped decorations on the tree. This reflects their legend of the poor widow who didn’t have enough money to decorate her tree, but when her children awoke on Christmas day, the tree was covered in webs that glistened gold and silver in the new day’s light.
JAMAICA
Jamaicans dress in elaborate costumes to celebrate Christmas with parades and “Junkanoo” dancers, which is based on African dances. The December 26th festival may have started as early as the 16th Century.
SPAIN
The Spanish dish, turrón, a sweet dish made from honey, egg white, sugar, and toasted almonds, is served during Christmas. Recipes date back to the 16th Century.
GREAT BRITAIN
Mistletoe was first hung as a Christmas decoration in Great Britain. However, the tradition of kissing under the mistletoe is thought to have originated in other parts of Europe.
HOLLAND
Children in Holland receive presents from Sinterklaas on December 5, rather than on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. And if they leave carrots for Sinterklaas’s horse, he’ll leave sweets for the kids.
ICELAND
Thirteen jólasveinarnir, or “Christmas Lads,” deliver presents to children in Iceland. Originally, the Christmas Lads were pranksters. Each showed up on a specific day around Christmas and performed a trick.
JAPAN
Children in Japan receive their Christmas presents on their pillow during Christmas night. Many Japanese families serve fried chicken as their traditional Christmas meal.
NORWAY
In Norway, people hide all the brooms in the house on Christmas Eve to prevent witches from stealing them for a midnight ride. It’s also a Christmas Eve tradition to leave a bowl of porridge in the barn for the gnome who protects the farm.
GERMANY
In Germany, it is traditional for children to decorate their Christmas lists with pictures and then leave them on the windowsill overnight. Then, the Christkind delivers gifts at Christmas. Also in Germany, it’s a tradition to leave a shoe or boot outside the front door on December 5, so that Sinterklaas will put small presents in their shoes for the following morning (Saint Nicholas Day).
RUSSIA
Here, Christmas is celebrated on January 7, and Babouschka brings gifts to children. Babouschka, meaning old woman or grandmother in Russian, is based on the biblical story of the woman who didn’t give a gift to the baby Jesus. So, to repent, she gives gifts to children. Wonder why we celebrate Christmas on December 25 anyway? Here’s where the tradition came from.
POLAND
The traditional Christmas meal in Poland is called the Wigilia. Held on Christmas Eve, Wigilia is derived from the Latin phrase “to watch.” Families here believe that what happens during Wigilia festivities predicts the coming year.
ITALY
Italian families celebrate Christmas Eve with the Feast of the Seven Fishes and eat lentils during the holiday season to ensure luck and wealth for the following year. The children in Italy receive gifts from La Befana during Christmas.
IRELAND
It’s traditional for Irish families to leave out mince pies and pint of Guinness as a snack for Santa. As kids get older, this tradition may come to an end and continue to be passed on. Learn about what to say when your child asks, “Is Santa real?”
FINLAND
In Finland, families decorate the holiday tree with geometric mobiles made out of straw. It’s also customary to enjoy a sauna on Christmas Eve before Santa’s visit; according to the ancient custom, this ritual cleanses the body and mind.

Hello December! Bring on the holidays and the start to winter and a new year.
December can be such a great month, as long as you plan it well and execute the plan with precision. Did You Know This About Thanksgiving?
1. What year was the celebration that is most commonly considered to be the first Thanksgiving?
A: 1621. This is the celebration that people most often talk about when they are talking about the “first” Thanksgiving. But there are others that are claimed to be the first Thanksgiving. There was another celebration in Plymouth in 1623 and one in Boston in 1631 that people claim was the actual first Thanksgiving.
2. How long did the first Thanksgiving celebration last?
A: Three days. It was celebrated much earlier than our current celebration, possibly in late September. There were about 50 European settlers and around 90 native Americans (from the Wampanoag tribe) who attended the multi-day feast.
3. Under which president did Thanksgiving become an annual holiday?
A: Abraham Lincoln. The U.S. has celebrated Thanksgiving off and on since 1774. On November, 26, 1789 George Washington made a proclamation that the country would celebrate a day of thanksgiving to God. Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving a national holiday after Sarah Joseph Hale, the woman who wrote “Mary Had A Little Lamb,” convinced Lincoln to make Thanksgiving a national holiday. That came after writing letters to him for 17 years.
4. Was turkey served at the first Thanksgiving?
A: Turkey wasn’t served at the first Thanksgiving. Legend has it that venison, duck, goose, oysters, lobster, eel, and fish were shared, along with pumpkins and cranberries. Surprisingly, it is believed that the pumpkins were served in a stew and in pies, although slightly different than we make today.
5. Which president was the first to give a turkey a presidential pardon?
A: Ronald Reagan. John F. Kennedy was the first president on record for unofficially sparing a Turkey in 1963. The Reagan administration in 1987 gave the first official presidential pardon to a turkey as a joke. The turkey was spared and put into a petting zoo. George H. Bush made it an annual tradition in 1989 and each president since has carried on the tradition.

According to folklore, if the deer have a gray coat in October, you should expect a hard winter.

The Washington County Home Builder’s Assoc. Home Show is a great place to talk about your home improvement project.
The home improvement specialists from MTB Windows & More are available to talk dreams and plans next weekend at Hagerstown Community College. The campus’ ARCC building is the site of the 2019 Washington County Home Builder’s Association Home Show.
“We just like to meet people, answer their questions and talk with them from a very relaxed, no pressure approach” says Willie Eby, owner of the Clear Spring-based construction and home improvement company. The MTB team — at booth number 200 — has been a regular participant at the wildly popular two-day show.
This is the perfect opportunity to “interview” those who will be personally involved in designing and implementing your building project. MTB’s designer Royce Eby encourages folks to bring pictures and lists of desires in a project to the conversation. Of course, those discussions can take a deeper dive into what can and will be accomplished at a later date.

February is Here, But Spring is Coming
February is upon on us and that means spring – and home improvement season – is closer.

February Facts
February was originally the last month of the calendar year. It was eventually moved in 450 B.C. to its place as the second month. This was done so the calendar would reflect a standard lunar year.
February is packed with holidays and history. February 2nd is Groundhog Day; the 12th is Abraham Lincoln‘s birthday; the 14th is St. Valentine’s Day; the 15th is Chinese New Year and Susan B. Anthony‘s birthday; the 18th is President’s Day.

1. What year was the celebration that is most commonly considered to be the first Thanksgiving?
A: 1621. This is the celebration that people most often talk about when they are talking about the “first” Thanksgiving. But there are others that are claimed to be the first Thanksgiving. There was another celebration in Plymouth in 1623 and one in Boston in 1631 that people claim was the actual first Thanksgiving.
2. How long did the first Thanksgiving celebration last?
A: Three days. It was celebrated much earlier than our current celebration, possibly in late September. There were about 50 European settlers and around 90 native Americans who attended the 3-day feast.
3. Under which president did Thanksgiving become an annual holiday?
A: Abraham Lincoln. The U.S. has celebrated Thanksgiving off and on since 1774. In 1789 George Washington made a proclamation that the country would celebrate a day of thanksgiving to God on November 26th. Some presidents after him continued the tradition, declaring different days of Thanksgiving. But it wasn’t until a proclamation by Lincoln in 1863 that the last Thursday of November became the official Thanksgiving holiday.
4. In what year did both the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and America’s Thanksgiving Parade start?
A: 1924. Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was started by Louis Bamberger in Newark, New Jersey but was transferred to New York City where it is now held by Macy’s. America’s Thanksgiving Parade in Detroit was inspired by Eaton’s Santa Claus Parade in Toronto, Ontario.
5. Which president was the first to give a turkey a presidential pardon?
A: Ronald Reagan. John F. Kennedy was the first president on record for unofficially sparing a Turkey in 1963. The Reagan administration in 1987 gave the first official presidential pardon to a turkey as a joke. The turkey was spared and put into a petting zoo. George H. Bush made it an annual tradition in 1989 and each president since has carried on the tradition.

Why are pumpkins part of Halloween?
A: Pumpkins are actually indigenous to the Western Hemisphere and have been found on the continent for thousands of years. Pumpkins entered into the Halloween celebration after Irish immigrants came to America and found that pumpkins were easier to carve than potatoes for the holiday.
When did the Jack-’o-lantern become part of the autumn celebration?
A: Jack-’o-lanterns have been around for hundreds of years. The legend is of a man named Jack, who according to legend, invited the devil for a drink. Jack did not want to pay for his drink, so he made a deal with the devil. The devil turned himself into coins, but instead of paying for the drink, Jack kept the coins. Later freeing the devil, he promised to change him back if he did not steal his soul. Upon Jack’s death, God would not let him into heaven because of his past and the devil would not let him into hell. Instead, the devil gave Jack a piece of coal, which Jack placed into a turnip. The legend goes that Jack used the turnip and coal to light his way as he looked for a final resting place. The original jack-’o-lanterns in Ireland were carved out of turnips or potatoes.
Why do we have Halloween parties?
A: The idea of people gathering together to celebrate dates back to the early American settlers, who celebrated the harvest. People would gather at these events and would share ghost stories, dance, sing and tell fortunes. Since that time, Halloween has become more of a holiday about bobbing for apples and candy than celebrating the harvest.
Who is responsible for bringing Halloween to America?
A: Halloween is mix of traditions from Celtic, Catholic and Roman religious rituals. Celts would dress in costumes and light bonfires to ward off ghosts, thought to return on Halloween. The Celts believe that the boundaries between the living and the dead blurred on Halloween, making it easier for ghosts and spirits to return to cause mischief.
When did candy corn become part of the celebration?
A: More than 35 million pounds of candy corn is produced each year according to the National Confectioner’s Association. Created in the late 1800s, the three colors are supposed to look like the colors in kernels of corn.
How did ghosts become part of Halloween?
A: Most cultures and civilization contain some sort of stories about spirits, many of whom return from the dead. According to legend, ghosts are “specters” and belief is based on the thought that a person’s spirit lives on after their death. Places or structures that are haunted by ghosts are thought to have some sort of connection to the ghost’s past.
How did costumes become part of the holiday?
A: Costumes were first worn to tell each other’s fortunes and for protection against evil spirits. The first costumes in Ireland were made of animal heads and skins. The modern celebration of Halloween still involves costumes, but many are not as creepy or scary as the first.
Did Trick-or-Treat start in America?
A: Trick-or-treating for candy and prizes is a common tradition in the United States. A predecessor of trick-or-treating is a Scottish and Irish practice called “Guising,” where children went from door to door in costumes collecting coins and food. Children would only receive the prize if they did a “trick” such as song or dance, before the treat was given.
How much candy is given out on Halloween?
A: One quarter (600 million pounds) of all of the candy sold in the United States every year is purchased specifically for Halloween. Ninety million pounds of that is chocolate.

As we celebrate this great American holiday, we thought it would be a great time to learn more about this pivotal period in our nation’s history AND enjoy some Independence Day Trivia. We hope you will take the time to learn a little more about our country’s legendary beginnings and then, if you’re in need of home improvement and home repair services, contact us for the expert help we can provide.
Did You Know: On July 4, 1776, the thirteen colonies claimed their independence from England, an event which eventually led to the formation of the United States. The colonies and England had already been at odds for a year when the colonies convened a Continental Congress in Philadelphia in the summer of 1776. In a June 7th session in the Pennsylvania State House (today it is called Independence Hall), Richard Henry Lee of Virginia presented a resolution with the now-famous words:
“Resolved: That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent states, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved.”
These words led to the drafting of a statement presenting to the world the colonies’ case for independence. Members of the committee included John Adams of Massachusetts, Roger Sherman of Connecticut, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, Robert R. Livingston of New York and Thomas Jefferson of Virginia. The drafting of the actual document — The Declaration of Independence — was given to Jefferson.
On July 1, 1776, the Continental Congress reconvened, and on the following day, the resolution for independence was adopted by 12 of the 13 colonies. The process of revision continued through all of July 3 and into the late afternoon of July 4, when the Declaration was officially adopted. Today, the original copy of the Declaration is housed in the National Archives in Washington, D.C.
From 1776 to the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence. The tradition of it being a patriotic celebration became even more widespread after the War of 1812, in which the United States again faced Great Britain. In 1870, the U.S. Congress made July 4th an unpaid federal holiday. It became a paid federal holiday in 1938.
Independence Day Trivia
- Only John Hancock actually signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. All the others signed later.
- The Declaration of Independence was signed by 56 men from 13 colonies. Each could have been tried for treason had the revolution failed, losing their lives and their family property.
- The average age of the signers of the Declaration of Independence was 45. The youngest was Thomas Lynch, Jr (27) of South Carolina. The oldest delegate was Benjamin Franklin (70) of Pennsylvania. The lead author, Thomas Jefferson, was 33.
- The only two signers of the Declaration of Independence who later served as President of the United States were John Adams and Thomas Jefferson.
- The stars on the original American flag were in a circle so all the Colonies would appear equal.
- The first Independence Day celebration took place in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776. This was also the day that the Declaration of Independence was first read in public after people were summoned by the ringing of the Liberty Bell.
- The White House held its first 4th of July party in 1801.
- Presidents John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe all died on July 4th. Adams and Jefferson (both signed the Declaration) died on the same day within hours of each other in 1826.
- In 1776, there were 2.5 million people living in the new nation. Today the population of the U.S.A. is 326 million.
- Fireworks are part of the tradition of celebrating this national holiday. More than 250 million pounds of fireworks will go up in smoke in 2018.
- Grilling food is also big on Independence Day. Approximately 150 million hot dogs are consumed on this day.
- Every 4th of July, the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia is tapped (not actually rung) thirteen times in honor of the original thirteen colonies.

A Great Father’s Day Gift

We hope the day is great one for all dads who take on the noble cause of being great fathers to their children and making the sacrifices that often come with being a dad.
The Father’s Day gift has become somewhat of a joke, with the punchline being an ugly tie or after shave, that is — and rightfully so in most cases — never used.
If you search for “Best Father’s Day Gifts 2018,” you will find suggestions like wireless headphones, shoes, skin care products, aviator sunglasses, etc… Now we’re not saying these would not be appreciated, but let’s think more practically. What if you gave dad the gift of “free time?” Take a look at projects around dad’s house. Maybe some have been started or maybe some are “To Dos” that may never get done if he doesn’t have some professional help.
If those building projects — like new vinyl siding, replacement windows and/or doors, roofing, etc… — were done, could you spend the day with dad at the park or riding bikes or fishing? Did You Know: The modern holiday of Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother at St Andrew’s Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia. Her campaign to make “Mother’s Day” a recognized holiday in the United States began in 1905, the year her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, died. Ann Jarvis had been a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War, and created Mother’s Day Work Clubs to address public health issues. Anna Jarvis wanted to honor her mother by continuing the work she started and to set aside a day to honor all mothers, because she believed that they were “the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world.”
In 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother’s Day, held on the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor mothers. Jarvis’ holiday was adopted by other countries, and it is now celebrated all over the world.
