As summer comes to an end, everyone should use this checklist for end of summer to-dos that will make the busy fall season a little less stressful on everyone under the same roof.
August is still technically part of summer, but with vacations wrapping up and back-to-school activities kicking off, most people’s mindset shifts to a fall mindset. And, with fall being a typically busy season for most families, we think this checklist for the end of summer is a great way to be ready for the shorter days that are on the horizon.
Here is the list. Be sure to click on the link to get all the details.
- Clean and store summer gear
- Set up a family calendar
- Clear the way for easy weeknight dinners
- Share your backyard harvest
- Organize family photos
- Clean carpets and floors
- Organize for back to school
- Check emergency kits
- Organize closets BEFORE back-to-school shopping
- Schedule some “do-nothing” time for fall
- Clean and organize the garage
- Finish up outdoor projects
- Check your home for signs of pests
- BONUS: Check for roof leaks and check windows and doors that do not seal tightly.

Old houses are often dark and have a closed-in feeling. If you have such a house — or can get a deal on one because it isn’t selling — think about a renovation to add more windows.
With real estate market values returning, banks are willing to lend money now to re-invest in a home that should hold the value. The Hagerstown and Tri-state area are filled with houses built during a time that no longer appeal to many in the general home-buying public. However, the idea of taking out a few walls, adding some windows, and a few other touches can make a big difference. Adding new windows that allow for more natural light can often be a giant step in the right direction.
We found an article that talks about a home renovation that did exactly that.
When the owners of a Portland, Oregon 1970s split-level home approached architect Risa Boyer about a full renovation, their main goal was to open up the home, both internally and to views of their yard.
The interior transformation hinges on three important changes: opening up the main staircase; creating an open-concept plan for living, dining and cooking; and adding a new master bedroom suite behind the renovated kitchen to give the homeowners the privacy they craved.
If you would like to schedule a time to meet with an MTB representative to talk about how a major renovation project can turn an ugly house into a radiant, dream home, contact us here or call us at our Clear Spring, MD office at 301-766-7161.
Happy Father’s Day to all the dads working hard to serve the needs of their family.
Dads right now are waking up to gifts which include ties, after shave lotion, lawns tools, macaroni art displays, etc….. But what every dad really wants is a cost-efficient home where the thermostat is left where he set it and lights are only on in rooms where people are actively doing life. Well, all dads know that is a pipe dream, but maybe MTB Windows and More can help pops out this year. We’ll come back to that a little later, but first a history lesson about Father’s Day.
The story of the first Father’s Day in America happened in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 5, 1908. Grace Golden Clayton suggested to the minister of the local Methodist church that they hold services to celebrate fathers after a deadly mine explosion killed 361 men. While Father’s Day was then celebrated locally in several communities, unofficial support to make the celebration a national holiday began almost immediately.
William Jennings Bryant was one of its staunchest proponents. In 1924, President Calvin “Silent Cal” Coolidge recommended that Father’s Day become a national holiday. But no official action was taken until 1966 when President Lyndon Johnson, through an executive order, designated the third Sunday in June as the official day to celebrate Father’s Day. In 1972 Father’s Day was officially recognized as a national holiday.
Now, back to giving dad an energy-efficient home, that will put more dollars in the family budget. Replacing the house’s light bulbs with all LED bulbs is a great start. But, for even bigger savings, help dad replace old windows with replacement windows (by Andersen Windows) or drafty exterior doors with air-tight replacement Therma-Tru doors. Now this will really get dad excited about Father’s Day.
MTB Windows and More can help make dad happy this year. Our home improvement specialists are trained to install the high quality building products made to make houses more energy-efficient.
If you would like to schedule a time to meet with an MTB representative to talk about how to make dad the happiest he’ll ever be, contact us here or call us at our Clear Spring, MD office at 301-766-7161.

Pay too much in taxes? With tax day just now in the rear view mirror, many Americans are writing checks to the government while wishing they had spent the money on a sound investment instead. Perhaps the best investment/tax shelter is in a shelter of your own — your home that is.

Now is the time for early tax refund checks to start arriving and we have a suggestion on the best way to use those funds: replace your windows, doors or add a new roof to your home.
We realize it is more fun to spend a tax return on something like a vacation or a new car, but most will agree there is often a better way to spend it. This is especially true if your home has older windows, inferior exterior doors or, worst of all, a leaky roof. A roof that is days, weeks or months away from being a major expense is the most urgent need on this list.
However, if your roof is in good shape, replacing windows and/or exterior doors could save you more money in the long run. Cold days and nights in the winter and hot days in the summer can wreak havoc on utility costs. Those savings over several years could total more than what you need to spend now to significantly bring down those electric costs. Not to mention the added security offered by the Andersen Windows and Therm-Tru doors that MTB Windows &
More installs. These high-quality products, including the GAF Shingle System we use for roofing materials, offer the best value for the best price.
For more information about these products or the highly-skilled installers that we employ, call our Clear Spring, MD office at 301-766-7161 or contact us here. Our installers are trained by the manufacturers to make sure they know exactly how to do the best job for our company and for you, MTB’s valued client. We serve residents and business owners in the Hagerstown, Greencastle, Martinsburg and Frederick County, MD areas.
Most weather forecasts right now have some reference to ice or snow.
Ice, snow, freezing rain, sleet, etc… are always red flags for us in the Tri-state area of Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. However, many local residents don’t think much about the roof on their home and how these weather conditions can adversely effect this important part of their costliest investment.
We advise people to make sure gutters are cleaned of all debris, so that as the snow melts, it can be moved off the roofing materials and away from the house as quickly as possible. However, if excess snow and ice does not naturally clear due to long-periods of extreme temperatures and clogged gutters, it would be good to find a way to safely remove the buildup on the house. We do recommend extreme caution, as using ladders during this time of year can be very dangerous. We also recommend hiring a professional to do this if needed, instead of taking unnecessary risks.
The prolonged exposure to consistent moisture on roofing materials can cause damage to the shingles and lead to the growth of fungi as warmer temperatures arrive. This is even more likely if we have a wet spring season.
If your roof was already in bad shape, the combination of snow, ice and spring rains could be the final nail in the roof’s coffin. If that is the case, please call us for a roofing estimate. We’ll explain why we use the GAF Shingle System with a lifetime warranty and why it would be a great choice for your home.

We hope you and your family have a great Thanksgiving!
We are very thankful for you and thank you for helping us to have a wonderful 2016 thus far. Thanksgiving is the perfect holiday to lead into the Christmas season. While some seem to want to jump over it or leave it trampled behind in the mad rush of Black Friday, we treasure this day as a reminder that we have so much for which to be thankful.
From all of us at MTB Windows & More, we say “Thank you” to all of the military veterans for your service to our country. And for those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom, we are forever indebted to you and your families for your sacrifice.
Did You Know: Originally, Veterans Day was called “Armistice Day,” and the date was chosen to commemorate the signing of the armistice with Germany that ended hostilities during World War I. At first, the focus of Armistice Day was on the veterans of World War I, though it was always meant to honor all veterans of foreign wars, who risked their lives on the battle field to secure the freedoms of all Americans. Over time, with the passing away of the World War I generation and the coming of new conflicts during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, the focus on the 1918 Armistice was lost and the name of the holiday was changed.
Congress also made November 11th a day of prayer and thanksgiving and expressed a desire that the U.S. flag be on display during this day and that special ceremonies be held. Finally, in 1938, Armistice Day became a permanent, official public holiday.
Today, Veterans Day is generally regarded as honoring all those who ever served in the U.S. Armed Force rather than only those who actually fought in a war.

Is Your Roof Ready For Winter?
The chilly evening temperatures have made it to the Tri-State area (Maryland, West Virginia and Pennsylvania) and it probably won’t be long before Old Man Winter starts knocking on the door during the day. For many, this is a time to start slowing down a bit and cruise into the holidays and hope for an early Spring. However, we encourage you to do an inspection of your shingles now (use binoculars from the ground or call us to scale the top of your home) and see if an upgrade is needed while the weather allows. Since winter can be very hard on your roof, it is important to make sure your roof is ready to handle what lies ahead.
The Roof Problem In Winter
A typical scenario is that a front moves through overnight and drops an inch or two of snow on your roof. Then, the following day, temperatures warm up a bit. The melting process can be slow and take longer to drain away than rain.
So the rising temperature during the day melts the snow, which starts to make its way to the internal roof drains or parapet wall scuppers. But before all the melting snow can drain off the roof, the shortened daylight hours and plunging temperatures close in again, causing the water to re-freeze. If your roof has failing seams, cuts, abrasions, or holes, the water will penetrate those areas, expanding when it freezes, causing more damage.
As this cycle of melting and re-freezing continues, the moisture will either go away as the air dries it out or stay locked in to the cavities for a longer period of time, causing the roof to fail.
We May Be The Solution
The professionals at MTB Windows & More are trained to inspect, repair and replace roofs the right way. We use the GAF Shingle System to ensure the materials are high quality and the installation is secure, with a wind rating of up to 130 mph.
Contact us today if you would like to ask questions or schedule a time to meet with us about all the options for making sure your roof is done right.
Fall is not too late to start planning on putting a barrier of windows, doors, roofing and siding for the colder temperatures coming soon.
Do your windows let cold air in to your home? Do you hear the whistling of the winter winds coming around the corners of your exterior doors? Is your roof able to withstand another round of freezing temperatures, snow and ice?
If you can’t say “yes” to all of these, plan to contact the professionals at MTB Windows & More before it gets too late in the year and you may have to rely on another company that does not install the high quality materials that MTB recommends for a job done right.
Contact us today if you are in the Hagerstown, Greencastle, Martinsburg or
Frederick areas for an assessment and quote on taking care of these problems now, before the situation becomes dire in the middle of winter.
We Will Never Forget The Tragic Events of 9/11
The professionals at MTB Windows & More hope you and your family have a fun and safe Labor Day weekend!
Did You Know: Labor Day in the United States is a public holiday celebrated on the first Monday in September. This year it is September 5th. The holiday honors the American labor movement and the contributions that workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.
Beginning in the late 19th century, as the trade union and labor movements grew, trade unionists proposed that a day be set aside to celebrate workers. In 1887, Oregon was the first state of the United States to make it an official public holiday. By the time it became an official federal holiday in 1894, thirty U.S. states officially celebrated Labor Day.
Canada’s Labour Day is also celebrated on the first Monday of September. More than 80 countries celebrate International Workers’ Day on May 1 – the ancient European holiday of May Day – and several countries have chosen their own dates for Labour Day.

More Than $300 Billion to be Spent on Remodeling and Additions by Early 2017
A new study is predicting that 2017 will see American homeowners once again spending big money on home renovations and upgrades as the housing market continues to stabilize and grow in many areas. The main reason for this is that equity is growing in the real estate — primary homes and investment properties — which means there is available cash for upgrades.
The types of projects expected to dominate the surge include the usual suspects; bathrooms, kitchens, additions and outdoor living spaces, like decks and patios. Other upgrades — which have likely been put off until a brighter financial day arrived — include new windows and doors, roof replacements, siding and HVAC systems.
The author of this article on the matter, is expecting the increase in spending to be around 8 percent by early 2017, which would be more than 3 percent above the historical average. To read all about the wave of home improvement spending that is anticipated, click here.

One Week After Brexit, Markets Are Normalizing and Any Threat to The US Housing Market Seems to Have Faded
For anyone who was panicking that the stock market would crash and the US recovery — especially the housing market — would sink as well, it looks like things will be okay. While we know that there is a long way to go in the process and how the rest of the world will be effected, we are happy that early reports are contradictory to the “doomsday” reports that happened in the hours that followed the UK leaving the European Union.
In fact, some conservative experts are saying that the fear of global volatility will likely keep the Federal Government from increasing interest rates. This is good news for those still considering borrowing money to buy or build a new home – we recommend Mt. Tabor Builders in Clear Spring, MD for this project — or do a major home remodeling or renovation project. Even just two weeks after the exit, US Stock Markets are hitting new highs.
Here is an article that speaks to the early results of the UK’s decision to go independent. #Brexit
